In 200???, employees and board members of Quote… Unquote, Inc., operators of Channel 27 Public Access TV began to investigate the possibility of founding the state’s first ever media-centered arts school, as well as the first ever state-authorized public charter school.

On September 19, 2008, the New Mexico Public Education Commission, on a unanimous 8-0 vote, chose to approve the charter application, thus making Media Arts Collaborative Charter School the first ever New Mexico-state chartered public school.

As the first state-chartered school, MACCS wrote the Performance Framework, Media Standards, and guidelines, some of which remain in effect for the 60 state-charter schools.
